Karsten Wentink

Karsten is a prehistorian and usewear specialist. He finished his Research Master in 2006 with a thesis on the deposition and ceremonial use of flint axes in the Funnelbeaker culture, for which he was awarded the W.A. van Es prize later that year.

Currently Karsten is a PhD student within the research project “Ancestral Mounds.” In his research he will deal primarily with the artefacts from barrows. He will focus in particular on the “cultural biography” of these grave goods: how were they made, where did they come from, how were they used, how are they placed in the grave? The findings will be compared to data from settlements and votive depositions. Hopefully this research will shed more light on the meaning and significance of these objects, the identity of the dead and the graves they were placed in.
